Rhode Island Over The Road Jobs

Though Rhode Island is the smallest state in the entire country, it has a powerful truck driving industry. Whether you want to drive throughout New England or drive to other regions of the country, you may want to consider becoming an over-the-road driver. OTR drivers in Rhode Island drive to other states, sometimes going as far as the other side of the country.

Rhode Island has many major trucking employers, many of which hire over-the-road drivers. In this state, some of the largest employers are C.R. England, Ultimate Management, USA Truck, and TMC Transportation.

Salaries in Rhode Island tend to be significantly higher than the national average, perhaps due to the cost of living in this area. Light truck drivers in this state earn an average salary of $34,700 per year (O*Net, 2013). Those who drive tractor-trailers earn an average income of $41,500 per year (O*Net, 2013).

Your salary may be influenced by many factors. Your earning potential may increase as you gain more experience, take on more difficult routes, and further your education through safety seminars. In many cases, OTR drivers earn more than local drivers.

You have to complete the proper training to become an over-the-road driver in Rhode Island. As an OTR driver, you will be expected to work independently and spend long stretches of time away from your employer. As a result, you must be confident in your skills and abilities.

Consider starting your journey at a truck driving school in Rhode Island. These trucking schools can help you earn a Class A, Class B, or Class C commercial license. Your training starts with classroom training, in which you learn about driving laws and memorize the facts that will be included on your knowledge test.

From there, you go to the practical part of your training. Alongside a licensed trucking instructor, you get behind the wheel of a straight truck or tractor-trailer and start mastering driving maneuvers. This part of your training prepares you for the road test.

Once you are ready for your road test, you can go to the State of Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles and apply for your license. You must file a medical examination, self-certify your driving career, and take the required tests for your chosen license class and endorsements. To become an interstate driver, you will need to be at least 21 years old.
