The process of getting a commercial driver's license is fairly involved in New Mexico. First, you must study the commercial driver's license manual and learn all about driving laws and basic driving terminology. If you attend a truck driving school, they'll likely cover this information in their classroom hours. Once you've done enough studying, you can go to the Motor Vehicle Department of New Mexico. If you pass their written test, you can get your learner's permit.

Then, take your learner's permit back to your driving school and use it to get plenty of behind-the-wheel driving practice. Covered skills include backing, parking, turning, and highway driving. Once you have gotten comfortable driving a tractor-trailer, you can return to the Motor Vehicle Department and take your skills test. Passing your skills test allows you to get your commercial driver's license and start your career as an over-the-road driver.
