Louisiana Owner Operator Jobs

Are you considering a truck driving career, but looking for something with more flexibility? If you have prior business experience or you're willing to put in some hard work to learn about business ownership, Louisiana may have a place for you as an owner-operator. Owner-operators fill many different roles; they own their truck, manage clients, and transport loads. Many of the training and licensure requirements are the same, but it's important to prepare for the different demands that come with being an owner-operator.

Becoming an owner-operator in Louisiana may allow you to take on manufacturers, retail shops, and shipping companies as clients. The job outlook in Louisiana indicates a growing need for truck driving services. Between 2010 and 2020, O*Net expects a 17% increase in job openings. This affects your business because it shows that some trucking companies may not be able to keep up with business, creating an opportunity for you to shine.

Your salary may vary quite a bit in the first several years of your business. As you grow your business and become more experienced, you may be able to significantly increase your earnings. It's important to note that business owners do not receive paid time off, health insurance, or guaranteed raises. As a result, you should plan for this in your business plan.

As you prepare to become an owner-operator, you may want to start by seeking out a reputable truck driving school. A Class A truck driving program doesn't just give you experience in the safe maneuvering of a tractor-trailer; it also gives you some of the knowledge and understanding you need to succeed as an owner-operator. In fact, many of the skills gained in a truck driving program are needed in business ownership. You may learn how to inspect your truck, read trucking routes, and navigate unfamiliar roads. Of course, getting over 1,000 miles of truck driving experience can also be very helpful.

Once you have completed your truck driving course and you feel secure driving a tractor-trailer, it's time to go to the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles and apply for your commercial driver's license. You must pass a written exam and a skills exam before you receive a CDL.

The State of Louisiana also requires you to get your business license before you operate as a truck driving business. This can be a lengthy process, so start it early. You may need to provide financial records, proof of insurance, and file forms with the IRS.
