Just like local truck drivers, over-the-road drivers must get their commercial driver's license before driving for a company. This can be a bit of a process, so it's important to plan appropriately. First, you must learn about the parts of a truck, driving laws, and other parts of truck driving theory. You can get this information during the classroom part of a truck driving course. You can then go to the Motor Vehicle Licensing Department and take your written exam. If you pass this exam, you get your learner's permit.

With your learner's permit, you can return to your trucking program and get behind-the-wheel experience. Plan on getting at least 1,000 miles of driving experience. Upon the completion of your Class A driving program, you can take your skills exam at the Motor Vehicle Licensing Department and get your license.

Some trucking companies require additional training for over-the-road drivers. You must be able to respond well to emergencies and handle long stints of time away from home. To ensure that you are up to the task, your employer may have you shadow another over-the-road driver before you begin working.
