Attending the proper training program is a big part of a successful over-the-road trucking career. You may be able to study at a dedicated trucking school, a truck driving company, or a community college. Whichever route you decide to go, you must choose a CDL-certified school. This is required by the Illinois Secretary of State. If you do not attend a state-approved course, you will not be able to take your driving exam.

Approved programs in Illinois can teach you everything you need to know to become an over-the-road driver. In addition to driving skills, you may learn how to stop at interstate trucking stops, check your vehicle at weigh stations, and keep your truck running safely on long drives. Once your training is over, you can apply for a commercial driver's license. As long as you are 21 or older, you can use your CDL to drive over-the-road.

You may still complete on-the-job training after getting hired. You'll likely shadow an experienced over-the-road driver to learn about driving long distances and staying safe while traveling.
