Georgia Owner Operator Jobs

Business ownership is a long-term goal for many truck drivers. If you want to become a truck driver and increase your income potential, you may wish to look into becoming an owner-operator. Georgia can be an excellent place to begin your truck driving career, as there are over 74,000 truck drivers in this state. Taking on this level of responsibility requires a great deal of experience, education, and planning.

Working as an owner-operator is much different from working as a company driver. Instead of looking for a job with a trucking company, you must begin your new job by looking for clients and building your business reputation. When you start out, you may have to work hard to get clients and have fewer loads than your competitors. However, as you become a more established part of the trucking community, you can increase your workload.

Getting more clients also allows you to earn more money. O*Net indicates that most truck drivers in Georgia earn between $23,200 and $59,800 per year, with an average annual salary of $39,200 per year. Owner-operators may be able to earn more money than company truck drivers, since you can set your own schedule and take on a workload that is appropriate for your abilities.

To become an owner-operator in Georgia, you must first earn your commercial driver's license. There are two main options to consider: a Class A license and a Class B license. Those who have Class B licenses are slightly limited in what they can transport and what kind of truck they can drive. As a result, you may find it more helpful to earn a Class A license.

The Georgia Department of Driver Services requires all CDL applicants to complete a state-approved training program before taking their CDL tests. In your CDL program, you can learn about driving laws, interstate driving standards, and managing your time as a truck driver. However, you can also get over 100 hours of trucking experience. This experience is important—as an owner-operator, you may have to drive in a variety of settings.

Upon the completion of your training, you can go to the Department of Driver Services and take your driver's test. If you pass both the written exam and the skills exam, you can receive your commercial driver's license.

Before you can officially become an owner-operator, you must apply for your business license and set up the appropriate business insurance.
